imageAn unusual but mild rain passed over Healdsburg on June 24th. A very refreshing pause which gently washed any dust from the good-looking fruit and dampened the ground so we won’t have to irrigate for a while now.

Spring is a marvelous time to be at the vineyard, boasting warm days and quite cool nights. The vines are pushing nicely with lots of green leaves soaking up the sun on their course to bud break and bloom. As we watch the tiny grapes form on the vines, we realize what an Epicurean pleasure it is to follow a vine through its seasonal cycle.  In August, we will be watching those same grapes turn from bright green to a majestic purple within a week, from start to finish. Two months later, we will harvest the sweet purple fruit of our 2013 crop.  Wine making is a patient business since the wine made this fall will not be in your hands for another three years after harvest.  This is why having a long-term relationship with our customer is so important to us.

In other news at Kinsella Estates, Spencer Lake is full after the winter rains. Our usual pair of mating Canadian geese have laid their eggs and are waiting for the goslings to hatch.  There will soon be not just two geese gliding on the lake, but a clutch of babies too.

Our tomato, cucumber, melon, rhubarb, strawberry, lavender and sunflower plants are growing fast in the warm, spring sunshine. The cherries are ripening and will soon be sweet enough to eat.

The Healdsburg Farmers Market opened the first Saturday in May and is a great gathering place for the all the local artisans, with their farm-to-fork produce. We have a few new, exciting restaurants, which have opened near the Square, although we were sad to see our Michelin Two Star restaurant, Cyrus, close last fall. We are looking forward to the Jazz Festival, which runs the first ten days in June and attracts world-class acts.

We will send you updates throughout the summer to keep you connected with the next generation of the wine you have come to enjoy.
